Coffee shop creativity

Narration by: Shariq Ali

Evening of every first Wednesday of the month, our local poetry group gathers in Coffee Corner of our town and we consume ninety minutes or so sharing our passion about poetry. I have a feeling that coffee shops are stimulating for creativity but I always wonder why?

Is it coffee beans or passionate exchange of ideas or simply the whoosh of espresso machines and caffeinated chatter typical of most coffee shops that creates just the right level of background noise to stimulate creativity?

A research at the University of Illinois suggest that extreme quiet tends to sharpen our focus, which can prevent us from thinking in the abstract form. A little noise is needed to think out of the box.

This is why if we’re too focused on a problem and are unable to solve it, it is better to leave it for some time and then come back to it and we often get the solution.  I am personally convinced that moderate noise in surroundings stimulate creativity. I have written many poems whilst travelling on London underground train.
